Clinging on to Collagen

Once we hit our 20’s, collagen production starts to approximately decrease by 1% each year.

*Cue furious taping on calculators*

But what is collagen and why is it so important?

Collagen is a protein that supports the structure and firmness of the body’s tissue. As we age, production of collagen slows and as a result the skin will start to lose its elasticity and firmness. Fine lines will appear, the skin will become more fragile and pigmentation may occur.

But before we all start rushing to book up face lifts and botox, there are many NATURAL ways in which we can help boost collagen production.

By selecting the right skincare, we can help boost the production of collagen and improve skin appearance. Whilst these products cannot add collagen to the body, they can stimulate the skin to produce higher levels of collagen.

Cue the Pro-5 Collagen range by skinChemists.

What I like about the Pro-5 Collagen collection is that there is something for everyone. With a Serum, a day moisturiser and a night moisturiser there are ways to help boost your skin’s collagen production throughout the day.

The Pro-5 Collagen Lifting & Firming Serum

Ingredient Intensyl aims to instantly lift and tighten sagging skin, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles in the process. Paired with Skin Tightener ST combines marine and plant extracts, which work in synergy to moisturise and smooth the skin, whilst reinforcing the skin's protective barrier.

Pro-5 Collagen Marine Cream

This cream is designed to improve skin elasticity and skin tone and can be used morning and night as part of your usual skin routine. Ingredient Suberlift is clinically proven to actively lift and firm the skin, and combined with Collasure, a marine collagen based active, hydrates the skin, prevents moisture loss in the skin, improve elasticity, and further reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Pro-5 Collagen Ultra Rich Cream

This cream is great for tackling skin elasticity and tone by including active ingredient Suberlift, which is clinically proven to actively lift and firm the skin. As well as a restoration in collagen production, active ingredient Matrixyl 3000 works to reduce wrinkles caused by lack of skin elasticity.

My favourite:

Pro-5 Collagen Oxygenating Night Cream

Because our skin has more effective cell renewal during our sleep time, I’m always a fan of creams that are specially formulated to take advantage of this. Not everyone likes to wear moisturiser during the day, so night time is perfect to help repair the skin whilst we’re not even aware of it.

In this cream, active ingredient Gatuline Bio works to promote cell health and regeneration within the skin, reducing the visibility and wrinkles by renewing dull or ageing skin, and intensely moisturise the deeper epidermal layers.

skinChemists currently have the Lifting & Firming Serum, Marine Cream and the Oxygenating Night Cream in a kit which is great as it covers all bases!

As well as using collagen-boosting skincare, we should also make sure that our diets include lots of collagen stimulating foods. Try to increase your intake of Vitamin C rich fruit and vegetables as these are natural sources of collagen production. Soy products also help towards collagen production as do the anti-oxidant properties of prunes and blueberries.

Let’s give our skin a helping hand!

Emma
